What are the main DETERMINANTS that determine the health status of populations
Employment, ethnicity, gender, income, education, housing and deprivation
What is the NZDep?
Is a measure of socio-economic deprivation within an area
- runs of a scale from least deprive 1 to most deprived 10
Is good health distributed evenly in New Zealand?
NO - people who have low SES & a high level of deprivation tend to always be less healthy and have a high mortality rate - short life expectancy
- Maori and PI have low SES and so have poor health
How is NzDep measured?
By household access to:
- Car - Employed/unemployed
- Telephone - Income
- Qualificatitons - Bedroom occupancy
- Own home - Single parent health
- Receiving a benefit
What is public health?
The health of a population - NOT an individual
- preventing and promoting health in groups of people
What is the definition of epidemiology ?
The study of distribution and determinants of disease in a population
What is the social gradient of health?
How prone to illness someone is in their socioeconomic situation
What is relative poverty?
A measure of poverty comparing btw groups in a single country
What is absolute poverty?
A set figure that can be used to compare poverty between different countries
