Lecture 20 Flashcards
DNA, RNA, Proteins
What are polymers?
Large molecules made from long chains of smaller chemical units called monomers
What does poly mean?
many
What does mer mean?
part
What does polymer mean?
Mant parts (like a paperclip chain)
What is a monomer?
One part –> single units that make up polymers (like the paperclips)
Monomers form long chains of various types, such as what four things?
- Linear
- Branched
- Cross Linked
- Network
What is another word for proteins?
Polypeptides
What are proteins/polypeptides?
linear polymers constructed from a set of 20 different amino acids with different side-group chemistries
What are the different side-groups?
R1, R2, R3, R4, etc.
Biopolymers are (large/small) molecules made up of what?
-large
-repeating smaller units called monomers
How are peptide bonds formed? (the reaction)
by condensation reaction that removes a water molecule
What exactly happens to form peptide bonds
The carboxyl group (-COOH) of one amino acid reacts with the amino group (-NH2) of another amino acid, linking them together
What are Nucleic Acids?
DNA and RNA
What are DNA bases?
A, T, C, G
What are RNA bases?
A, U, C, G
Phosphate Backbone forms what?
the backbone of DNA and RNA, linking the nucleotides together
