Q

What is anabolism?

A

synthesis/building up

biosynthesis of complex molecules using energy, usually in form of ATP - anabolism is ATP-using

Q

What are the major products of catabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins?

A

pyruvate and acetyl CoA
under aerobic conditions, AcCoA feeds into the TCA cycle
resulting electrons from the TCA cycle are passed down the electron transport chain and generate ATP by oxidative phosphorylation

Q

What are the major routes of ATP prodution in the cell?

A

glucose (6C) breakdown via glycolysis -> TCA cycle -> oxidative phosphorylation to yield 30 ATP/glucose
lipid breakdown via lipolysis; released fatty acids then broken down by beta oxidation
