Lecture 5 Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is X-ray crystallography?
Allows us to see the bond angles and lengths of molecules but requires a crystal which generally needs more effort
What is mass spectrometry?
Provides the mass of molecules and their fragments but requires an ionised form of the molecule
What is NMR spectroscopy?
Carbon NMR tells us the carbon environments whereas H NMR tells us the hydrogen environments, relies on the electron density around atoms as this can have different effects on the magnetic field
What is IR spectroscopy?
They tell us the functional groups found in the molecule as different bond strengths are dependent on the atoms present in the bond and they vibrate at different amounts which can be picked up using resonance
What are D and L labels?
When the final OH of a molecule is on the right, this is a D molecule and on the left is an L molecule
