Lecture 5 - Gel Filtration Chromatography Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is Dialysis
A
A process that separates molecules according to size through the use of semipermeable membranes containing pores of less than macromolecular dimensions
2
Q
Describe the process of dialysis
A
Protein molecules (big molecules) are retained within the dialysis bag, whereas small molecules diffuse into surrounding medium. Separation of large and small molecules.
3
Q
What is the most commonly used dialysis material?
A
Cellophane (cellulose acetate)
4
Q
What are Centrifugal concentrators?
A
Centrifugal force pushes solution through a membrane with size selective pores
5
Q
What are centrifugal concentrators used for?
A
concentrating, desalting proteins
