LECTURE #5 - linear kinematics Flashcards
(38 cards)
what is kinematics ?
description of the spatial and temporal components of motion
what do kinematics involves ?
involves position, velocity and acceleration of a body without considering the forces that cause these motions
what are two qualities of kinematics ?
scalar and vector
what is scalar ?
fully described by their amount of magnitude
what are some examples of scalar ?
distance, time and position
what is vector ?
described by both magnitude and direction
what are examples of vector ?
displacement, velocity, acceleration
what are three types of motion ?
- linear motion
- angular motion
- general motion
what is linear motion ?
translation
what is angular motion ?
rotation
what is general motion ?
combination of translation and rotation
TRUE OR FALSE
linear motion could also be something that is curved
TRUE
TRUE OR FALSE
is linear motion moving along a straight pathway
TRUE
rectilinear and curvilinear are examples of what kind of motion ?
linear motion
what is rectilinear motion ?
one-dimensional motion along a straight line
what is curvilinear motion ?
The motion of an object moving in a curved path is called curvilinear motion
what are examples of rectilinear (linear motion) ?
- box pushed along ground
- COM path during : 100m sprint, ice skating, skateboard and bicycling
what does COM stand for ?
centre of mass
what are examples of curvilinear (linear motion) ?
- path pf ball in air
- COM path during : long jump, diver, gymnast
TRUE OR FALSE
in angular motion, some points travel a further distance
TRUE
TRUE OR FALSE
in angular motion, one side is fixed and one arm can move around it
TRUE
what is general motion ?
combination of linear and angular motion
what is the most common type of motion in sports and human movements ?
general motion
what are some examples of angular motion :
- gymnast swinging around Hugh bar
- joint mouton
- ball spinning in air
- diver (spinning)
