lecture 7 Flashcards
what are some Pre-natal terms to know
In Utero: Development that occurs in the uterus
Gestation: period of time between conception and birth (pregnancy)
Embryonic: early prenatal development
Fetal: late prenatal development
where does the Human Nervous System begins to form?
at 2 weeks gestation
what are the 5 stages of brain development?
- proliferation
- migration
- differentiation
- synaptogenesis
- myelination
what is nature and nurture
Nature: pre programmed, innate, genetic (development not affected by experience)
Nurture: shaped by environment and experience
what is proliferation
- mitosis (division) of neural stem cells in ventricular zone of neural tube
- when created to zygote it needs to divide for you to grow and for your cells to grow
what is migration
new cells migrate outwardly towards the cortical surface and along radial glia
what is differentiation
cells differentiate into different neuronal types, and axons and dendrites formed
what is synaptogenesis
synapses formed between neurons
what is myelination
begins in spinal cord, then the midbrain, midbrain, forebrain
what is neural darwinism
we create more neurons/synapses so the brain decides which neurons are needed to keep (like during Proliferation and Synaptogenesis)
As moving up evolutionary tree…
Need Bigger Brain (more invaginations to increase surface area)
Need relatively more prefrontal cortex
Is there a correlation between brain size and intelligence?
Use a brain to body mass ratio rather than overall brain size
humans > apes > dolphins»_space;» frogs
what are some complications about brain to body mass ratio for intelligence?
Complications:
1. Should blubber count in body mass value? (no because it is not smart tissue, it is just installation)
2. How to measure intelligence in animals?
3. How to measure intelligence in HUMANS?
