Monster Study 1939
- stuttering experiment performed on 21 orphaned children in 1939
- Dr. wendell johnson, university Iowa
- Mary Tudor, Graduate assistant conducted experiment
- tried to induce stuttering in healthy children and to see whether telling stutterers that their speech was fine would produce a change
- told that they would be receiving speech therapy
- half the children given positive speech therapy, praising fluency
- other half received negative speech therapy, telling them that their speech was bad
Monster study continued
- some who weren’t stutterers were told that they have a great deal of problem with their speech
- told them they were stutterers and that they myst stop themselves from stuttering ]
- named the “monster Study” by johnson’s peers
- 6 of the orphaned students were awarded $925,000 by the state of Iowa in 2007
Stuttering self help and mutual aid groups
- self help groups as an adjunct to stuttering therapy
- Self help and mutual aid and related groups for people who stutter:
- national Stuttering Association (NSA)
- National Association of young people who stutter
- speak easy international
- stuttering Foundation of America
When should you as a clinician refer a stuttering client to a self help group?
- “clinicians need to determine whether or not to recommend self-help group participation to their clients that stutter on an individual basis.”
- Need to consider goals
- some may prefer to not participate in self help groups
- depends if client is ready for this type of support
- may be trying to accept stuttering/not quite ready for this type of support
What are the benefits for stutterers who participate in these groups?
- better success with treatment goals in/out of treatment
- enhance ability to maintain goals across environment
- increase social interpersonal skills
- enhance general well being-social/emotional
- understanding of others and relating to their similar situations–knowing– “if you stutter you are not alone” (NSA slogan)
- improvement in treatment outcomes and quality of life
- helping to reduce negative reactions from those individuals in the clients environment -parents, spouse, etc… by providing information/education
RE: self help groups: Different types of service delivery/ support options
- some prefer self help groups only
- some may do both- treatment/self help
- per:”many reported that their interest in receiving treatment actually increased as a result of participating in self help
Negative Reactions to stuttering disorder can include:
- Affective reaction
- behavioral reaction
- cognitive reactions

such as feelings embarrassment, anxiety, shame, guilt about stuttering

such as tension or struggle during stuttering, avoidance or circumlocution
stuttering self help and mutual aid groups: cognitive reactions
such as negative thoughts, low self esteem, and reduced self- confidence
stuttering self help and mutual aid groups: Restrictions/ Limitations in activities
- Daily Activities: employment, school, social situations etc… phone, speeches, academic environments
- self help groups can assist client with these issues - can also provide a place to help with generalizing therapy techniques
