Lecture 9 Flashcards
What is embryo transfer?
Collection of an embryo from a donor animal and place it into another animal
What two techniques are involved with embryo transfer?
Superovulation of the donor and storage and maniopulation
What is MOET?
Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer
Allows females to have more offspring
What is the risk of MOET?
Inbreeding
How do you superovulate?
Use of hormones (FSH or PMSG) and then Prostaglandin to regress corpus luteum so that a new heat arises
What is IVF?
In vitro fertilisation - production of embryos in test tubes
When do we use IVF?
In older valuable donors that don’t cycle normally - last resort
What method is used to sex semen?
FACS (Fluorescense Activated Cell Sorting
What does FACS show?
Measures DNA content of individual sperm
How much more DNA does the X-bearing have than the Y bearing sperm?
3.8% MORE
