Models
Provide an approximation , a physical or conceptual representation of a scientific phenomenon that cannot be observed directly.
Theories
Can be formed or modified to explain the results of studies, they also guide the design of new studies.
symbolic interactionism
interaction between individuals and in small groups.
Functionalism
factors of society work together to maintain stability, society is a system that consists of different components working together.
Conflict Theory
views society in terms of competing groups that act according to their own self interests , and not social equilibrium
Culture
all the beliefs, assumptions, objects, behaviors, and processes that make up a shared way of life
Material Culture
The objects involved in a certain way of life
Non-Material Culture
comprised of shared ideas, knowledge , assumptions, values, and beliefs that unify a group of people
social norms
expectations that govern what behavior is acceptable within a group
a type of non-material culture that consists of the elements of culture that have meaning only in the mind. Affect behavior and how people see the world.
Symbolic Culture
Social Institutions
Hierarchical systems that bring order to interpersonal interaction like the government and economy, Education , Religion, Family Health and Medicine.
Statistics Used to examine the nature of a specific population by quantifying subsets of that population.
(Useful for making sense of the organization of a group and predicting behavior based on membership in overlapping categories)
Demographics Parameters include age, gender, nationality, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and education level.
Spatial Inequality
The unequal access to resources and variable quality of life within a population or geographic distribution
When people are not given equal treatment in the face of environmental hazards or natural disasters. correlation between the relative resources in a geographical area and the value a society places on the people who live there.
Lack of Environmental Justice
Residential Segregation
the separation of different demographic groups into different neighborhoods.
