Lecture Six Flashcards
How does CN7 exit the cranium? then what does it join with?
stylomastoid foramen
goes to parotid gland and joins with parotid plexus and the nerve divides into 5 branches.
What are the five branches of the parotid plexus+CN7?
"Two Panicking Zebras Bit My Coccyx" T= temporal P= Post Auricular Z= Zygomatic B= Buccal M= Mandibular C= Cervical
Bells Palsy is a result of?
Swelling or compression on CN7
CN 7 innervates?
- Salivary glands (chorda tympani)
- Nasal Mucosa (Nasal nerve)
- Oral Mucusa (lesser and greater palatine)
- Lacrimal Gland (greater petrosal)
- Taste (sensory, ant. 2/3)
- Stapedius muscles in middle ear (motor)
first four are parasympathetic
Parotid gland innervated by what nerve? where does it synpase? if parasympathetic innervated consistency of mucosa? is sympathetic?
CN9 glossopharyngeal
synapses in otic ganglion which is in infratemporal fossa (parasymp)
If para= thin water fluid
if symp= thick mucosa
What is the largest salivary gland? where is it located?
Parotid
between ramus and mastoid process
Infection in parotid gland can cause? what percent of salivary tumors are found in parotid gland? Where is pain often felt?
Mumps.
80% (removal is risky due to potential damage of CNV11)
Behind the ear/temporomandibular joint due to innervation by CNV3
Postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibres from the sympathetic chain enter the skull by travelling on which artery?
Internal carotid.
Cauda Equina made up of?
Dorsal and Ventral roots
Geniculate Ganglion, motor or sensory ganglion?
Sensory (for facial nerve)
