Why did elections happen ?
Ebert worked as quick as possible to run elections to form a constituent assembly ( an elected body with the specific task of drawing up a new constitution )
Aims of the Spartacist / KBD ?
Wanted republican government controlled by workers’ and soldiers’ councils , welfare benefits, nationalism, workers’ control of major industries.Opposed to ww1.
Support of the Spartacist / KBD ?
a throng of workers who would often join them on their rallies.
Aims of the USPD ?
Wanted a republic with national Reichstag working with workers’ and soldiers’ councils, welfare improvements, nationalisation of industry and reform of the army

grew in strength during WW1 as war weariness grew.

wanted moderate socialist republic with democratic elections and basic general freedoms, welfare improvements and gradual nationalisation of industry.

Appealed largely to working voters

to protect Catholic interests and supported a democratic constitution

A left leaning liberal , based on the old Progressive party.Supported a democratic constitution.

Most support came from intellectuals and middle class.

Nationalist party , based on the old Conservative Party.Rejected the democratic constitution.
Support of the DNVP ?
Most support came from landowners and some small business owners

A right leaning liberal party , based on the old National Liberal Party.Opposed to new republic but willing to participate in its government.
Support of the DNVP ?
Most support came from upper middle class and business interests
