What is the purpose of the Health and Safety at Work Act? How does it related to the land-based industry?
This act governs all workplace activities and enforces the need for safe working practises, placing a duty on both employers and employees.
E.g. conduction of risk assessments when working with high-risk animals.
What is the purpose of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations?
Enforces the HASAWA and provides framework for management of health and safety; ensures employers take proactive approach to protect employees from workplace risks.
What is the purpose of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Designed to ensure the safe use of lifting equipment and applies to anyone owning, operating or controlling lifting equipment, minimising risk of injury.
E.g. tele-handlers used in farming must be maintained and inspected regularly with supervision during use.
What is the purpose of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Regulated to limit the amount of electrical and electronic waste being incinerated or sent to landfill to reduce environmental impact; processes must be in place for correct disposal.
e.g. promotion of reuse and recycling within an agricultural organisation.
What is the purpose of the Working Time Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Regulates working hours of all employees, legally stating the maximum amount of hours that can be worked.
e.g. a farm worker must sign and agreement with the employer to exceed maximum working hours.
What is the purpose of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations?
Ensure manufacturers put safe machinery on the market, setting out detailed health and safety requirements that must be adhered to and met.
What is the purpose of the Working at Height Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Aims to prevent injury or death caused by a fall from height; employers must ensure work is planned and supervised by competent people and safety equipment is provided.
e.g. forestry workers must undergo training and safely use the right type of equipment for heights.
What is the purpose of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Aims to reduce the risk to employees health through controlling the amount of noise exposed to at work; there are legal limits on noise produced with protective equipment needing to be provided and health surveillance.
e.g. kennel workers may be provided with hearing protection when working with loud noise.
What is the purpose of COSHH? How does this relate to the land- based industry?
Aims to protect worker from harm caused by exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace - requires employers to carry out risk assessment, implement control measures and ensure health surveillance.
e.g. protecting agricultural workers from harm caused by pesticides.
What is the purpose of RIDDOR? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Requires all employers, employees and those in control of premises to report specific work- related incidents, including fatalities and serious injuries - enables authorities to investigate and prevent future incidents.
e.g. an farm working sustaining an amputation whilst operating machinery requires reporting.
What is the purpose of Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order/Fire Safety Act? How does this apply to the land-based industry?
Outlines responsibilities for ensuring fire safety in non-domestic premises, placing a duty on owners to ensure steps are taken to reduce the risk of fire with appropriate arrangements in place.
e.g. risk assessments should be carried out in relation to fuel storage and flammable materials in a agricultural organisation.
What is the purpose of PUWER? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Outlines the responsibilities of all workers to ensure work equipment is safe and suitable for use and maintained in a safe condition - workers need to be trained in the safe use of equipment.
e.g. all farm machinery must be regularly maintained, inspected and tested for safe operation.
What is the purpose of PPE Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Requires employers to provide suitable PPE for workers who may be exposed to occupational risks, especially if those risks cannot to controlled in other means.
e.g. employers provide dust masks to workers when cleaning out enclosures with sawdust.
What is the purpose of Manual Handling Operations Regulations? How does this relate to the land-based industry?
Requires employers to protect workers from risks associated with manual handling, avoiding unnecessary handling when possible, assessing risks and implementing measures.

Aims to reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases spreading from animals to humans, granting authorities power for investigation, control and reporting of these diseases.
e.g. allows relevant authorities to slaughter any poultry carrying salmonella.
