Why did violence increase?
There was an assasination attempt on Lenin on the 30th August 1918 and this increased his already-present desire to bring terror.
As the Bolsheviks’ control spread across Russia, the violence followed? What was this known as, and when (roughly) was it?
This was known as ‘Red Terror’ and Bolshevik control over Russia spread into 1921.
Who did the Bolsheviks use to spread their terror?
The Chekka (secret police) and the Red Army.
Who did the Bolsheviks use terror against?
Anyone who opposed them, or any kind of dissent against their authority.
What do official estimates put the death toll by the Chekka as?
Around 13,000.
However, what to historians argue that the death toll by the Chekka was?
Around half a million.
