Rule 1 (General Rule)

A

Cardinal Numerical Adjectives:

A

Cardinal numerical adjectives precede the noun they modify, as well as any other adjectives (numerical or not) that precede the noun.
eg. J’ai deux livres.

Cardinal numbers - all invariable, except for “one”
eg. un homme (one man) / une femme (one woman).

Ordinal Numerical Adjectives:

A

Ordinal numerical adjectives usually precede the noun they modify. To make, add - ième, if ends i -e , remove and add ième. For 9, change -f to -v.
eg. C’est le deuxième jour.

Ordinal numbers - “First” and “Last” are variable. The rest are invariable, but note that if preceded by a definite article, it must match the gender of the noun:

le premier livre (the first book) / la première peinture (the first painting) and le dernier livre ( the last book)/ la dernière peinture ( the last painting)
vs
le deuxième livre (the second book) / la troisième bouteille (the third bottle)

A

Multiplicational numerical adjectives usually precede the noun they modify.
eg. Il veut un double whisky.

Multiplicational numbers are all invariable.

Fractional Numerical Adjectives:

A

Fractions - demi can be masculine or feminine, while the others can be singular or plural:

un demi kilo (half a kilo) / une demie bouteille (half a bottle)
vs
un quart (one fourth) / trois quarts (three fourths).
