Definition of Health Psychology
Health psychology is the field within psychology devoted to understanding psychological influences on how people may stay healthy, why they become ill and how they respond when they do get ill.
Health psychologists also promote interventions to help people stay well or get over illness across the lifespan.
What is the Bio psycho social Model?
Three interactive forces play a role in human functioning, well-being and behavior:
1. Biological - genetic & health-related factors
2. Psychological - perceptual, cognitive, emotional & personality factors
3. Socio-cultural - interpersonal, societal, cultural & ethnic factors
What are the 4 P’s?
- Predisposing factors = Factors that make a patient susceptible to a health condition
- Precipitating factors = The immediate cause of the health condition or its current symptoms
- Perpetuating factors = Factors that may make symptoms continue or worsen.
- Protective factors = Ways people are protected from maladies (a disease or ailment).
Name various models within health psychology
- Biomedical model
- Biopsychosocial model
- 4PS
- HBM - Health Belief Model
- SoC - Stages of Change
Explain Biological factors?
• Genetics
• Family history
• Physical development
• Intelligence
• Temperament
• Medical comorbidities (health-related factors) and overall health function that impact our wellbeing
What is the Health Belief Model?
It’s a behaviour change model. An individual will make changes based on their perception of the severity of the potential illness, benefits of changing the behaviour to prevent or reduce the effect of illness, and obstacles to the recommended behaviour change.
What is the 1 key concept of the Health Belief Model?
Perceived susceptibility: The belief that one is susceptible to a particular health problem or condition.
What is Self-efficacy?
Self-efficacy is an individual’s belief in their ability to successfully perform tasks and achieve desired outcomes.
What are Predisposing factors
They can be biological, psychological or social (genetic predisposition, early life experiences, personality traits).
What are precipitating factors?
Immediate issues or events causing a person to present with symptoms (loss of a loved one, relationship breakdown, job loss, traumatic events).
What are perpetuating factors?
Behaviours or environmental factors that may worsen a mental illness (Negative coping strategies - maladaptive, ongoing stress, negative thought patterns).
What are protective factors?
Coping skills, strong support system, good health, financial stability, positive outlook on future, healthy lifestyle habits, positive coping strategies.
What does SEEDS stand for?
Sleep
Exercise
Eat well
Digital detox
Social Connections
Seeds provide a holistic approach to health and emotional wellbeing by addressing various aspects of a person’s life and promoting practices that contribute to overall wellness.
What are the 6 concepts of the Health Belief Model?
- PERCEIVED SUSCEPTIBILITY: The belief that one is susceptible to a particular health problem or condition.
- PERCEIVED SEVERITY: The belief that a particular health problem or condition is serious and will have negative consequences.
- PERCEIVED BENEFITS: The belief that taking a particular action, such as engaging in a health behaviour or seeking medical treatment, will reduce the likelihood of developing or experiencing negative consequences of a health problem.
- PERCEIVED BARRIERS: The belief that obstacles exist to taking a particular action, such as the cost or inconvenience of engaging in a health behaviour or seeking medical treatment.
- CUES TO ACTION: Environmental or personal factors that prompt an individual to take action, such as a health scare or a reminder from a healthcare provider.
- SELF-EFFICACY: The belief in one’s ability to successfully perform a particular behaviour, such as adhering to a medical treatment plan or engaging in a health behaviour.
What are the stages of change?
Precontemplation - Awareness, Concern, Hope, Confidence
Contemplation - Risk-Reward Analysis & Solid Decision to Change
Preparation - Commitment & Creating an Effective/Acceptable Plan
Action - Adequate Implementation and Revising of Plan
Maintenance - Integration of New Behaviour into Lifestyle
What is the Stage of Change Model?
The Stages of Change model, also known as the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), is a psychological theory that describes the process individuals go through when making behavioral changes.
What is the 2 key concept of the Health Belief Model?
Perceived severity: The belief that a particular health problem or condition is serious and will have negative consequences.
What is the third key concept in the Health Belief Mode?
Perceived benefits: The belief that taking a particular action, such as engaging in health behaviour or seeking medical treatment, will reduce the likelihood of developing or experiencing negative consequences of a health problem.
What is the 4 key concept of the Health Belief Model?
Perceived barriers: The belief that obstacles exist to taking a particular action, such as the cost or inconvenience of engaging in health behaviour or seeking medical treatment.
What are the five pillars of flourishing?
- positive emotion
- engagement
