Lesson 1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is a stimulus?
Detectable change in the external or internal environment of an organism
What is a receptor?
Detects stimuli (one form of energy) and converts to electrical energy to send information as electrical impulse to CNS via neurones
What is an effector?
Receives electrical impulses from CNS and brings about a response
Describe the sensory neurone
• Carries impulses from receptor to CNS
• Cell body in middle of axon
• Long dendron
Describe the motor neurone
• Carry impulses from CNS to effector organs (muscles/glands)
• Cell body at start of axon
• Have longer axon
Describe relay neurone
• Cell body at the start of axon
• Have no myelin sheath
• Longer axon
What is the axon?
Extension of the cell that transmitted impulses away from cell body to axon endings
What are dendrites?
Many thin extension of cytoplasm that receive impulses from other nerve cells and transmit impulses toward cell body
What is the cell body of neurone?
Contains nucleus and groups ribosomes called Nissl granules in the cytoplasm
What do Nissl granules do?
Synthesis neurotransmitters
What are synaptic end bulbs?
Swelling at the end of axon in which neurotransmitter is stored
What do axon ends do?
Secrete neurotransmitter by exocytosis into synaptic cleft
What do Schwann cells do?
Surround peripheral neurones in vertebrates and grow around axon to form multi-layered myelin sheath
What does the myelin sheath do?
Provides electrical insulation to speed up nerve impulse transmission
What are nodes of Ranvier?
Interval in myelin sheath between adjacent Schwann cells
