Lesson 1&2 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Pesticides
Products used on crops to control insects and other pests
Pollution
Any dirty or harmful substance in the environment
Acid rain
Rain that is far more acidic than normal
Smog
A yellow-brown haze that forms when sunlight reacts with air pollution
Ozone layer
A shield that protects living things from uv rays
Greenhouse effect
The trapping of heat by carbon dioxide and other gases in the air
Global warming
Rise in the earths temperature
Landfills
Huge pits where wastes are dumped and buried
Hazardous wastes
Human-made liquid or solid wastes that may endanger human health and the environment
Environmental protection agency
Governmental agency that is committed to protecting the environment.
Biodegradable
Broken down easily in the environment
Non- renewable resources
Substances that cannot be replaced once they’re used
Conservation
The saving of resources
Precycling
Reducing waste before it occurs
Explain what pollution is.
Pollution is harmful or dirty substances in the environment. There’s air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution.
What contributes to air, water, and land pollution?
Air pollution : exhaust from cars pollutes the air with carbon monoxide
Water pollution: trash, sewage, oil spills
Land pollution: trash, hazardous wastes, solid wastes
What are strategies to reduce the ways you contribute to pollution?
Don't throw trash out your car window. Throw things in trash cans Recycle, reuse, and reduce Carpool Dispose of hazardous wastes correctly Don't put trash in water
How does pollution effect the environment?
Water pollution:Kills animal in water, makes people sick if they swim in a contained body of water
Air pollution: smog makes people sick, destructed the ozone layer, if ozone layer is gone, you can get skin cancer
Land pollution: effects the soil, gets in the way, hazardous wastes can cause death, or injury
What are the 3 rs?
Reduce reuse and recycle. Reduce means to use less. Reuse means to use that product again if able to, and recycle means to put things like paper, metal and plastic in recycling bins to be able to be made into something else.
What are some actions individuals can take to protect the environment?
They can reduce reuse and recycle
Pick up trash on the ground
What are non renewable resources
Resources that can’t be replaced once they’re used.
