Lesson 1 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Algebra
A language of symbols including variables
Algebraic Expression
At least one variable and at least one operation
Associative Properties
The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change their sum or product
Base
A number used as a factor
coefficient
The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable
Commutative Properties
The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product
Constant
A term without a variable
Defining the Variable
To chose the variable and decide what it represents
Distributive Properties
Combines and adds multiplication
Equivalent Expressions
Same value, placed differently
Evaluate
To find the value of
Exponent
How many times a base is used as a factor
Factor the Expression
When numeric or algebraic expressions are written as a product of their factors
Identity Properties
The sum of an addend and 0 is the addend. The product of a factor and 1 is the factor
Like Terms
Terms that contain the same variables
Numerical Expressions
A combination of numbers and operations
Perfect Square
Numbers like 100 because they are the squares of whole numbers
Powers
Numbers expressed using exponents
Properties
Statements that are true for any number
Term
When addition or subtraction signs separate an algebraic expression into parts
Variable
A symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number
Order of Operations
Tells you which operation to perform first
