Chaos results from….
Humans, when given complete freedom, will act on their own self-interest in their interactions with others, even is such actions would harm others.
The Social contract
Individuals indeed agree to the limitation of their freedoms to the absolute authority of the sovereign, (i.e the State) in exchange for rights and the obligation to respect and defend the rights of others
Control…
The state not the individual has control.
This power comes from the people, who by living in society, have surrendered power to the State.
Laws
Legal rules or principals made by State institutions such as parliaments and courts that apply to all in a given society and are enforced by the legal system through legal consequences.
Rules
Principals outlining acceptable conduct that only apply to certain groups, made by leaders within that group, which are enforced through a variety of non-legal consequences.
Purpose of laws
Social cohesion

The willingness of members of a society to cooperate with each other for mutual betterment. (survival and prosperity)
4 MAIN roles of laws
1.Establishing guidelines for acceptable behavior (e.g. Paying for goods and services) and unacceptable behavior (stealing)
2.Outlining individual rights in the wording of laws (e.g. right to religious freedoms)
3.providing an avenue to peaceful and fair conflict resolution
4.Administering consequences to those that do not obey the law or infringe upon the rights of others.
Rule of law
The principle that everyone is subject to the laws of their society regardless of status and wealth
