What is the course structure?
Pre-Contact- what were the social structures, government structures and values in place within Indigenous communities prior to contact with European settlers
Point of Contact- what were the changes seen by Indigenous communities at the point of contact with European settlers and what were the early tactics of those settlers
Post-Colonial Era- even though colonization is an on-going process, we will still examine the ways in which Indigenous peoples have envisioned a life moving forward within the constraints of the colonial oppression today

What are clans?
Clans are familial groupings within Indigenous nations that typically are represented by animals or other significant cultural items.
The Haudenosaunee clans are encompassed of 3 animal groupings. What are they?
Air, water, and land.
What animals are in the air clans?
Hawk, heron, and snipe.
What animals are in the water clans?
Beaver, eel, and turtle.
What animals are in the land clans?
Deer, wolf, and bear.
How are the clans organized in longhouses?
They are organized according to clans, while each one is different they are organized in a balanced fashion. Also making sure that each side of the house has enough singers, dancers, cooks, speakers, and people to support them throughout the year to come.
In a matrilineal society do women or men dominate?
Everyone is seen as an equal, with a gift to bring the community, similar to the way mothers see their children.

Haudenosaunee Confederacy
What is passed down in matrilineal society?
The clan and nation is both passed down by mother’s side only.

Flint and it’s a type of rock.

Mountains
What is Oneida nation known for?
Standing stone
What do the names of each nation represent?
They represent the connection to the land and it’s something that is carried with pride.
How Canada defines certificate of Indian status:
- English Name
- Six Nations of the Grand River Territory (where the Crown thought we should live)
- “Upper Cayuga” (how the Government of Canada sees me)
- “Registered Indian (according to The Indian Act)
- “Indianness” has an expiry date which must be renewed
