Rome’s Geography and how it affected Rome’s growth.
Rome lies near the center of the Italian Peninsula. A high mountain range called the Alps separates Italy from the rest of Europe. Italy has some flat lands so that soldiers can march from one place to another. This made it easier for Rome to unite the entire peninsula. Italy also has several rivers which boats can use for transportation and trade. Italy has large, fertile, flat lands which were great for farming. This helped Rome produce products such as olive oil, wheat, grapes, and wine. They also raised sheep and goats for milk and wool.
How did the Estrucans and Greeks influence Roman culture?
Romans were influenced by the Greek city-states especially Athens. Romans also made Greek mythology their own by identifying their gods with those of the Greeks. The Romans also adopted Greek legends.
The Estruscans developed their own alphabet based on the Greeks and from this the Romans developed their own alphabet. The Estruscans also influenced Roman religion and architecture.
What is a forum?
.An open area in a city filled with public buildings, temples, and markets.
The Roman forum was the center of Rome’s government, religion, and economy. When Romans founded new cities, they would usually build a forum in the center.
What form of government did the Romans found?
A republic
How did Rome become a republic?
Rome had kings which ruled. Over time, Roman people became tired of the rule. They decided to overthrow the king and create a republic.
What is a republic?
.a government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials.
How did the Romans gain control of the Italian peninsula?
The Roman people became feared conquerors. They also made skillful use of force and diplomacy. The Romans conquered other places by using their army called the legion. Each legion was broken up into maniples. ON flat plaines all the maniples formed a solid battle line. Rome also had allies which helped them in conquest.
What is a legion?
The basic unit of the Roman army which had from 4500 to 5000 heavily armed soldiers.
What was a maniple?
A unit of between 60 to 160 soldiers. Each legion was broken up into several maniples.
What was the role of the Roman Forum?
The Roman Forum was the center of Rome’s government, religion, and economy. It was filled with public buildings, temples, and markets.
What was the basic unit of the Roman army?
The basic unit of the Roman army is the legion.
