Lesson 1.02 Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume.
Define volume.
The amount of space an object occupies.
Define mass.
The measure of the amount of matter in an object.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the measure of the amount matter in an object. While weight is how heavy the object is due to earths gravity.
What are the equivalent measurements between the U.S. and metric systems for length, mass/weight, volume, temperature, and time?
U.S. system:
1 foot = 12 in
1 pound = 16 ounches
1 gallon = 4 quarts
Metric system:
1 meter = 39.37 in
1 pound = 0.454 kg
1 gallon = 3.785 L
Record the prefixes and their values used in the metric system.
Kilo- = 1,000 hecto- = 100 Deca- = 10 Unit = 1 Deci- = 0.1 Centi- = 0.01 Milli- = 0.001
What are the seven base units for the International System of Units?
Length Mass Time Electric Current Thermodynamic temperature Amount of substance Luminous intensity
What is a conversion factor? Give an example.
A factor used to multiply or divide a quantity when converting from one unit to another so that units can cancel, which has an overall value of 1.
In a unit conversion factor, the value of the numerator is __ to that of the denominator even though the units are different.

Convert 3 miles to feet (show the setup used to solve)
5,280 ft * 3 mile = 15,840
1 mile
Convert 5,760 seconds to hours (show the setup used to solve)
5,760 sec * 1/60 hr = 96 hrs
1 sec
Convert 25 kilograms to pounds.
25 kg * 2.2 lb = 55 lb
1 kg
Convert 2 liters to gallons.
2 L * 0.264 gal = 0.528 gal
1 L
Write 32,000,000 mg in scientific notation.
32,000,000 mg = 3.2 x 10^7 mg
What is a derived unit?
Measurements calculated from the measurements of other units.
The unit cm3 is a unit of ________.
Volume
