Lesson 1Communication Processes, Principles, and Ethics Flashcards
(30 cards)
_____________ is inevitable.
Our need for self-expression leads us to
communicate not only our thoughts but
also our feelings.
Communication
Communicate can be done through :
Verbally
Non Verbally
A communication refers to
communication that makes use of language
in expressing ideas or emotions.
Communicators utilize speech to express or
communicate what they wish to say or
communicate.
Verbal communication
A ___________ communication is also a form of verbal
communication.
Written
A communication refers to
communication that does not make use
of language to communicate. Other than
words, this communication
involves body language, gestures,
appearance, and silence.
Non Verbal communication
4 types of nonverbal
communication
proxemics
kinesics
chronemics
haptics.
The signs and signals we convey to
others using our personal and social
space are referred to as
As an example, it determines
INTIMACY between people
Proxemics
Non verbal communication that refers to the use of body parts,
such as hands, arms, body, and face
movements, in communicating ideas or
emotions.
We interpret a great deal of meaning
through body movement. However,
communication through body language
might be interpreted differently in different
settings and cultures, so be cautious.
For instance, some cultures value eye
contact in communication, while others
view it as a sign of disrespect.
Kinesics
looks at how people use time. It
enables us to comprehend how people
conceptualize and organize time in their
interactions and interpersonal relationships.
Chronemics
refers to the use of the sense of
touch in communication. It is a type of
nonverbal communication in which people
communicate through touch.
In interpersonal interactions, it play a
key role in expressing physical intimacy.
But similar to kinesics, communication
through touch might be interpreted
differently in different settings and
cultures, so be cautious
Haptics
7 components of the communication process.
Sender
Message
Channel
Receiver
Feedback
Context
Noise
Carefully crafts the message
Sender
The reason behind any interactions.
Message
Is the means by which a message is conveyed
Channel
The one who receives the transmitted message
Receiver
Known as a barre that blocks/prevents effective communication to take place.
Noise
In any communication scenario, a ___________is
essential to confirm recepient understanding
Feedback
a collection of observable conditions that both the sender and the
receiver can use to associate the same elements with a specific message.
Context
3 Communication Processes
01 Transmission Model
02 Interaction Model
03 Transaction Model
Key Feature: Linear, one-way communication.
None any context
Process: Sender encodes a message, sends it through a channel, and the receiver decodes it.
Example: A pre-recorded lecture where the audience only listens and cannot interact with the speaker.
Transmission Model of Communication
Key Feature: Two-way communication with feedback loops.
There are Psychological and Physical context.
Process: Sender encodes a message, sends it to the receiver, who decodes it, sends feedback back to the sender, who then adjusts their message based on the feedback.
Example: A conversation where people take turns speaking and responding to each other.
Interaction Model of Communication
Key Feature: Simultaneous sending and receiving of messages, considering context and shared meaning.
There are Physical & Psychological, Social, Relational, and Cultural Context
Process: Both participants are continuously encoding and decoding messages while influencing each other’s interpretations based on their individual experiences and the communication environment.
Example: A face-to-face conversation where both people are actively listening and responding non-verbally while speaking.
Transaction Model of Communication
