2
Q

What is the decibel scale?

A

It’s a logarithmic scale which doubles every 3db. It has a reference value in which it is based upon. Means we don’t have to deal with big numbers

Q

What is active sonar?

A

Detects objects by transmitting sound and recieving an echo. Intensity measured in Dbs

Q

What are the characteristics of mud and silt ocean bottom?

A

16
Q

What is sound pressure measured in?

A

Decibels (dB)

17
Q

What is frequency measured in?

18
Q

What is a choke point?

A

A geographical feature, above or below the water which restricts the movement of submarines

19
Q

What is ambient noise?

A

Any background noise which is not target related

20
Q

What are the 2 catagories of ambient noise?

A

Man made

Natural

21
Q

What are the 4 examples of man made ambient noise?

A

Shipping noise
Sonar noise
Seismic survey
Oil rig noise

22
Q

What are the 4 examples of natural ambient noise?

A

Sea state (waves etc)
Precipitation (weather)
Biological noise (whales etc)
Ice noise

23
Q

What is the problem with ambient noise? Is it better or worse at low frequencies

A

Ambient noise is worse at lower frequencies

It masks the target noise and makes it harder to detect

24
Q

3 examples of a choke point

A

The English Channel
Straights of Gibraltar
Greenland - Iceland -UK Gaps

25
What is sound pressure measured in?
Decibels
26
What is the ocean bottom divided into? What three major provinces?
Continental shelf Continental slope/rise Deep ocean basin
27
What is the definition of frequency?
Number of complete cycles of a wave which go past a specific point in 1 second
