(14 cards)
Linnaean naming system?
Binomial Nomenclature aka the scientific naming system!
Phylogenetic systematics?
When determining similarities by phenotypic differences.
What were the two approaches to taxonomy? (2•)
•Earliest approach: Grouping animals with morphological similarities.
•Later approach: Grouping animals with evolutionary relationships.
Cladistics?
Analyzing different clades in a phylogeny.
Monophyly?
A single clade after a common ancestor.
The outgroup of a phylogeny?
The organism in which the most recent common ancestor is the common ancestor of the monophyly.
Synapomorphies?
A characteristic that is developed by a common ancestor and brought down by its descendants.
Analogous traits?
A trait developed repeat by convergent evolution.
Homoplasies?
Another word for analogous traits.
Homologous traits?
A trait inherited from a common ancestor.
Extant?
Currently alive species (non-extinct).
Relative Abundances?
The percent abundance of a species compared to all organisms in the area.
Absolute abundances?
Knowing the exact number of individuals of a species in an area.
Area constraint?
Going to a specific area many times to get as much information as possible.
