Lesson 2 Flashcards
(21 cards)
- A fumble shaking or violent tremblingof the ground
Earthquake
- Fishers structure or zone weakness Subtle movement or displacement has occurred
Fault
- Which has moved with the last 10,000 years, has historical and contemporary seismocity
Active Fault
- Are generated by sudden displacement along faults in solid, rigid layer of earths
Tectonic Earthquake
- earthquake induced by rising magma or lava beneath active volcanoes
Volcanic earthquake
- disruptive up-down and sideways movement or motion experienced during an earthquake
Ground shaking
- displacement on the ground due to movement of fault
Ground rupture
- sea waves resulting from the disturbance of ocean from/ by an earthquake
Tsunami
- a process that transforms behavior of a body of sediments from that of a solid to that of liquid subjected to extremely intense shaking
Liquefaction
- failures in steep or hilly slopes triggered by an earthquake
Earthquake-induced landslide
5 EARTHQUAKE-RELATED HAZARDS
Groud rupture
Ground shaking
Liquefaction
Earthquake-induced landslides
Tsunami
- sea waves resulting from the disturbance of ocean floor by an earthquake. Is a of giant seawaves commonly generated by under-the-sea earthquake and whose heights could be greater than 5 meters
Tsunami
Generated by earthquake
tsunami
Seawaves are generated because of movement of fault under the sea
tsunami
It is the increase in wave heights within a hundred kilometers with or during typhoons (when there are strong winds or tropical cyclones)
storm surge
wind generated
storm surge
2 types of tsunamis
local & far-field/distant
are confined to coasts within a hundred kilometers. Some causes are usually earthquake and landslide or pyroclastic flow. It can reach the shoreline within 2-5 minutes
local tsunami
can travel 1-24 hours before reaching the coastal of nearby countries
far-field/distant
SIGNS OF IMPENDING TSUNAMI
Feel an earthquake
Sea ocean water disappears from the beach, bay, or river
Hear an unusual roaring sound
