Barrier
BARRIERS TO LISTENING
- Passive Listening
- Drifting Thoughts
- Intrusion of the Past
- Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
- Overload of the Message
Many of the listeners are just plain lazy listeners. Passive listeners do not interact with the speaker. He/ she is just absorbing all the ideas presented by the speaker without trying to synthesize and understand the message. In the end he/ she will end up forgetting all speeches and the ideas presented by the speaker.
Passive Listening
This barrier to effective listening happens when the listener’s mind is preoccupied with something else, normally not related to speech of the speaker. Ex. Work-related deadlines, personal problems, etc. as if the listener is Physically present, but mentally absent.
Drifting Thoughts
Memories of the past events can be triggered by a mere word of reference to a place. That “Nostalgia” effect affects the listeners’ feelings, values, and attitudes into the speech setting.
Intrusion of the Past
The listeners negative advance judgment towards the speaker or the topic of the speech affects the success of the listening activity. He/ she assumes that the speech is boring because he/ she heard from a common friend that the speaker himself is not good and boring as well.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
- It is difficult for the brain to digest the overloaded message.
- When the message is lengthy or illogical in sequencing, it becomes more painful to retain the concentration. As a result listening becomes ineffective
Overload of the Message
