Lesson 2 Flashcards
What is flexion?
Flexion is the movement that decreases the angle between two body parts
Example: When the knee flexes, the ankle moves closer to the buttock.
What is extension?
Extension refers to the movement that increases the angle between two body parts
Example: Extension of the knee straightens the lower limb.
What is abduction?
Abduction is a movement away from the midline of the body
Example: Raising your hand to the side of the body.
What is adduction?
Adduction is the movement towards the midline of the body
Example: Lowering your arms to the side of your body.
What is elevation?
Elevation is the movement in a superior direction
Example: Shrugging of shoulders.
What is depression?
Depression refers to movement in an inferior direction
Example: Lowering your shoulder after shrugging.
What is pronation?
Pronation is flipping your hand palm facing down.
What is supination?
Supination is flipping your palm facing upward.
What is dorsiflexion?
Dorsiflexion refers to the flexion of the ankle, so that the foot points more superiorly.
What is plantar flexion?
Plantar flexion refers to the extension of the ankle, so that the foot points inferiorly.
What is medial rotation?
Medial rotation is a rotational movement towards the midline, also called internal rotation.
What is lateral rotation?
Lateral rotation is a rotating movement away from the midline.
What is inversion?
Inversion involves the movement of the sole of the foot towards the median plane.
What is eversion?
Eversion involves the movement of the sole of the foot away from the median plane.
What is opposition?
Opposition brings the thumb in contact with a finger.
What is reposition?
Reposition is a movement that moves the thumb and the little finger away from each other.
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is a conical movement of a limb extending from the joint at which the movement is controlled.
What is protraction?
Protraction describes the anterolateral movement of the scapula on the thoracic wall.
What is retraction?
Retraction refers to the posteromedial movement of the scapula on the thoracic wall.
What is excursion?
Excursion is the side-to-side movement of the mandible.
What is lateral excursion?
Lateral excursion moves the mandible away from the midline, toward either the right or left side.
What is medial excursion?
Medial excursion returns the mandible to its resting position.
