Q

What are the 2 components to a ecosystem health

A
  1. The richness→ number of diff species present
  2. Evenness → how close in number of each species

Q

Low species diversity;

A

1.Few successful species in habitat

2.Environment is quite stressful with relatively few ecological
niches and only a few organisms are adapted to the environment

3.Food webs wich are relatively simple

4.Change in environment have grave affects

6
Q

High species diversity:

A

1.Greater species in habitat → more stable ecosystem

2.More ecological niches are available and environment is less likely to be hostile

3.Complex food webs

4.Change in environment will have a less likely to be damaging to ecosystem as a whole

Q

What does the biotic index do/used for?

A

Compares relative frequency of indicator species

Used to determine conditions in the area

Q

Species conservation

A

It is important to preserve biodiversity of planet for a sustainable future

Species are assigned conservation status to help determine amount of resources required to help grow or maintain population

Q

what is in situ conservation? what does it do?

A

involves active managment of nature reserves or national parks

allows endangerd species to remain thier habitat and interacting with other wild species that help maintain thier niche

Q

what is ex situ conservation? what does it do?

A

conservation of species outside of natural habitat (varies for diff species)

plants: can be grown in botanic gardens or seeds stored in seed bank

captive breeding of animals: may sometimes be used and the offspring eventually realesd into natural habitat

it is used in cases where it is too dangerous for animals to stay in their natural habitat
