Lesson 4 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Define Map
a flat drawing that shows all or part of the earths surface
Define Globe
A spherical , or ball shaped model of the entire planet
Define Global Positioning System (GPS)
a technology system that transmits information from satellites to earth giving exact locations of a given object on our planet
Geographical information System (GIS)
a technology system that combines and provides geographical information from many different sources.
What is the difference between a map and a globe?
A map is a flat and easier to work with than a globe. the map can show smaller areas in greater details.
How do satellites help geographers
Satellites give geographers a look at the earth from an angle high above the earth showing what an area really looks like on earth.
How can we use GPS?
GPS is a 24 satellite system that transmits data to earth used to track people, food, cargo, and help it get to its location without getting lost.
Why do geographers use GIS?
They use GIS because it takes all the information from many databases and combines it together so you don’t have to spend so much time going through all the different systems one at a time.
Define Natural resources
Something that is naturally occurring (not man made) that can be used to satisfy human needs
Example of renewable resources
soil
water
plants
animals
Examples of non-renewable resources
coal
oil
natural gas
other rocks and minerals
What is an Energy Source?
POWER from fossil fuel, nuclear energy, hydroelectricity, geothermal, solar, and wind
Define Agriculture
the growing of crops or raising livestock for food
What kinds of tools do geographers use
GIS, GPS, Maps, Globes, Atlas
What is hydrology?
they study of the worlds water, they study what causes floods and droughts.
What does Human Geography study?
language, religion, political systems, economic systems, and population distribution
What does Physical geography study?
The study of the earth’s seasons, landforms, climate, soils, and hydrology.
Geographers look at the world in how many levels?
3 levels local, regional, and Global
What are the 3 levels of geography?
local, regional, global
What are 3 types of human environment interaction?
- how people depend on the environment for food, water, and natural resources.
- the way people adapt the environment to meet their needs
- the way people modify the environment like drilling for oil or building dams
