Lesson 4: Classification & Cladistics Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is taxonomy?
The science of classifying organisms into groups based on shared morphological features.
What is the hierarchy of taxa (from broadest to narrowest)?
Domain → Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species
(Mnemonic: Dear King Philip Came Over For Great Soup)
What are challenges in classifying organisms?
Similar morphology doesn’t always mean close relation.
Hybrid species.
What is a clade?
A group of organisms that includes a common ancestor and all its descendants.
What is cladistics?
A classification system based on evolutionary relationships.
What does a node on a cladogram represent?
A common ancestor from which two or more species diverged.
What are the three domains?
Archaea
Bacteria
Eukarya
