Lesson 4 - Organic Halides Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is an organic halide?
a hydrocarbon derivative containing one or more halogens
what are some examples of organic halides
CFC’s, Teflon, DDT, PCB’s
CFC’s(chlorofluorocarbons). What is their reason for being banned?
Because they could deplete the Earth’s atmospheric ozone layer, which blocks the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays
Teflon(polytetrafluoroethylene). What is its use, etc.
Generally Teflon is a safe and stable compound, but at temperatures above 260 degrees, the Teflon coatings on the non stick cookware start to break down, which releases toxic chemicals onto the air.
What is a DDT(Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane)
It’s an insecticide, that causes huge negative environmental issues, as well as cause breast cancer, diabetes, etc in humans.
What are PCB’s(Polychlorinated biphenyls)
They are toxic chemicals that are often formed as waste in industrial processes. They can cause cancer, health problems, and can be human carcinogens. They don’t break down easily and can stay in air, water, soil for long periods of time.
