What is imperialism?

When and why did the US become a world power?
In the 1890s the US lead the production of steel and oil and had more railroad tracks than any other nation. Many Americans saw this as a time to become a world power.
What were European nations doing while the US gained power during the Industrial Revolution?
They were competing for territory and economic gain in Asia and Africa.
How did the Industrial Revolution impact the world?
It sped up economic development for Europe and the United States. Both regions began to see their colonies as potential markets and resources for goods and raw materials.
How did the factories and mills of the Industrial Revolution impact the economies of Asia, Africa and Latin America?
Because of the speed of production in the Imperialist home countries, a lot more raw materials were needed. These regions had an abundance, not to mention, once the products were made, the colonies became a new market for the goods, and the home country became the controller of the goods.
What motivated the imperialists?
a sense of Nationalism, or the pride in ones nation
What was one way for a nation to show it was more powerful than another? Europe had been doing this for over a hundred years.
