what are digestive enzymes?
specific hydrolytic enzymes that have a preferred temp and PH
what does digestion do?
breaks food down into molecules small enough to pass through epithelial walls
what does absorption do?
absorbs nutrients from gut lumen into the blood or lymph
what is elimination during digestion?
expelling indigestible residues from the body
what breaks down into what during digestion?
proteins > amino acids
carbohydrates > glucose
fat > glycerol and fatty acids
nucleic acids > nucleotides
digestion is extracellular, what does this mean
it happens outside the cell
what does your mouth do at the beginning of digestion?
chews up food, mixes it with saliva to start breaking down starch, becomes a bolas
what are the 3 areas of your mouth?
soft palate, hard palate, uvula
what do your olfactory receptors and taste buds do aside from smelling and tasting?
remind you when your hungry

incisors: biting
canines: tearing
premolars: grinding
molars: crushing
what makes up each tooth?
enamel, dentine, and the pulp
what are the three different types of salivary glands
parotid (below ears)
sublingual (below tongue)
submandibular (under jaw)
what does saliva contain?
water, mucus, and salivary amylase
what does salivary amylase do?
breaks down starch into maltose
