Lesson 5 Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the three aims of first aid?
Preserve life, prevent injuries from worsening, promote recovery.
Why is emergency preparedness important in the workplace?
It saves lives, protects businesses, and prevents lawsuits.
What are key steps in emergency preparedness?
Conduct risk assessments, create evacuation plans, implement emergency response systems.
What does DRABC stand for in first aid?
Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation.
What should you do in the Danger step?
Ensure the area is safe before approaching the casualty.
What happens in the Response step?
Check if the casualty is responsive; introduce yourself, ask questions, gently shake shoulders.
What do you check in the Airway step?
Tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway.
How do you check Breathing?
Place your ear above the mouth, feel for breath, and look for chest movement for 10 seconds
What do you check during Circulation?
Look for signs of severe bleeding.
What causes shock in first aid terms?
Reduced blood flow to vital organs due to heart failure, fluid loss, or vessel dilation.
What are early signs of shock?
Rapid pulse, pale/blue skin, sweating, cold skin.
What are advanced signs of shock?
Weakness, vomiting, shallow breathing, weak pulse, restlessness, gasping, unconsciousness.
How do you treat someone in shock?
Lay them down, raise legs, loosen clothing, keep them warm, monitor pulse/breathing.
What is choking?
A blocked airway, partly or fully, causing difficulty breathing.
What are signs of choking?
Difficulty speaking, coughing, red face, distress, grasping the throat.
What is the first step when treating severe bleeding?
Wear gloves and apply direct pressure with a sterile dressing or clean cloth.
What should you do if an object is embedded in the wound?
Do not remove it; apply pressure around it to close wound edges.
What should you do after dressing the wound?
Call emergency services, secure dressing with a bandage, and check circulation.
How do you check circulation past a bandage?
Press skin/nail for 5 seconds—if colour doesn’t return in 2 seconds, it’s too tight.
What if blood soaks through the dressing?
Add another dressing on top. If both soak through, replace both while keeping pressure.
What is a key aim when managing heavy bleeding?
To prevent further blood loss and minimise effects of shock.
What should be considered first at the scene of an emergency?
Risks to yourself, the injured person, and bystanders.
Name two helpful resources in an emergency.
First aid supplies and emergency contact info.
