Lesson 6 - Plankton Flashcards
(8 cards)
Holoplankton
Spend all life in water column
Meroplankton
Spend a portion of life in water column
Rank the sizes of plankton small to large (7)
Femtoplankton, Picoplankton, Nanoplankton, Microplankton, Mesoplanton, Macroplankton, Megaplanktom
Rule of 2 in relation to plankton size
0.02, 0.2 e.tc. Anything larger than 200 is mesoplankton then larger than 1000 is macro
What is the compensation depth?
Depth at which photosynthesis rate = Respiratory rate of a single phytoplankton cell
Critical depth?
Depth at which respiration rate equals rate of photosynthesis
What is the SCM?
Depth with which there is maximum concentration of chlorophyll production?
Why are protist zooplankton so important?
Because they provide a link between picoplankton and the larger inverterbrae zooplankton
