Lesson 8.1 Human population distrubtion and density Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is population density?
Population density is the number of people per area (square kilometers).
What is population distribution?
Population distribution refers to how the population is spread over an area.
Give an example of population distribution.
Very few or no people live in deserts and mountains, whereas populations are very high in coastal areas due to the availability of fresh water.
What is a population?
A population is all the organisms of one species living in a defined area at the same time.
What is the lag phase in population growth?
The lag phase is the period of time in population growth when an organism is adapting to its new environment and the growth is slow.
What is the log/exponential phase?
The log/exponential phase is when the growth rate of a population increases over time as all requirements are available.
What is the stationary phase?
The stationary phase occurs when the growth rate of a population has slowed down to zero as the carrying capacity is reached.
What does carrying capacity mean?
Carrying capacity is the maximum size of a population that an environment can sustain in terms of food, water, and other resources.
What is the relationship between birth rate and death rate at stationary phase?
At the stationary phase, the birth rate equals the death rate.
