lesson three - geomorphical processes Flashcards
(24 cards)
what is hydraulic action?
the impact on rocks due to the force of the waves.
what is abrasion?
material picked up and hurled against the cliff.
what is attrition?
rocks hitting off each other.
what is solution?
rocks containing calcium carbonate causes them to breakdown.
what is wave quarrying?
air becomes trapped in cliff face the increase of pressure causes rocks to breakdown.
what is traction?
the rolling of rocks to heavy to carry.
what is saltation?
small stones bounce along seabed.
what is suspension?
small particles picked up and carried.
what is solution?
dissolved materials.
what is aeolian deposition?
pocket of temp difference causes winds to blow material for a short distance before depositing it.
what is marine deposition?
when sea energy is low or erosion is high causing sediment accumulation.
what is biological weathering?
caused by plants and animals.
what is physical weathering?
freeze and thaw.
what is mechanical weathering?
breaks in rocks due to temp changes.
what is hydrolysis?
acidic water ( rain ) causes the rocks to breakdown.
what is oxidation?
the oxygen reacts with the water causing staining.
what is carbonation?
CO2 reacts with limestone to form calcium bicarbonate which dissolves easily in water.
what is hydration?
minerals absorb water causing the rock to expand and break.
what is soil creep?
the slow continuous movement of soil downslope.
what is mudflow?
rain can cause large amounts of sediment to flow downhill.
what is rockfall?
weathering causes rocks to become dislodged and unstable resulting in a fall.
what is runoff?
water flows over the surface of the coastline.
what is rotational slip?
soft rock can overly hard rock and become saturated in which causes whole sections to move downwards.
what are landslides?
cliffs made of softer rock slip due to heavy rainfall.
