Lessons from Marc Flashcards
What are the 3 mistakes live players do when checked to OOP?
- They don’t defend their check back range well - it contains too much air and SDV (mediocre hands)
- They tell me what they have via bet sizing which is proportional to the bet size
- They overstab
What is more important than my image on the table at low stakes?
In low stakes everyone is their own hero, so if someone just got stacked or lost a huge pot, they are going to be a lot more sticky, so that’s when it’s not a good time not to bluff.
As opposed to a situation when I got caught bluffing- where it would still be okay to bluff.
Playing in position, in which boards do villains raise their strong stuff and call their weak stuff?
On which boards can they call with their strong stuff?
on dry boards, villians can trap (check-call and not check-raise) even if I bet small.
On wet boards, they will check-raise their strong stuff.
Defaults: What does HH do IP SRP as PFR on the flop?
On wet boards - bet such that they raise with their strong stuff and call with their weak stuff (half pot SRP or third pot in a 3-bet pot).
Defaults : on the turn IP - what should I ask
Are they capped? If yes, bet big
If no, ask - can I choose a size where they raise with their strong stuff and fold their weak stuff? If yes, bet small. If no, bet big or check.
Defaults: OOP- what do I want to think about villian?
Will our opponent overstab or telegraph their handstrength via bet sizing tells?
If yes - check range
If not - to simplify, range bet good boards, range check bad boards
What framwork should I use in poker in order to have a solid thought process?
I need a repeatable thought process, eg a list of questions I ask every time to reach the highest EV. That list should be tailored for me.
For example: What is their range? What are the defaults? What would happen if (runout)? What would I do if (inverse)? What if I do if I had another hand?
What are solvers used for?
To build the intuition to maximally exploit. As a simple example, If a solver calls more hands than humans don’t in a spot, a bluff is profitable. if a solver calls less, bluff them less.
Studying by myself: What should I do?
- Know my opponent’s range:
Narrow his range after every action, use tells like sizing/timing tells when applicable. Use equilab and (given the actions plus my assumptions) put him on a new sifted range after each action.
- Talk it out! Practice speaking my thought process! If I’m not able to articulate it in a minute, am I really able to think it in 10-15 seconds. It forces me to have organization, it forces me to assess whether what I’m saying is helpful (talking about range advantage and nut advantage vs a fish is funny as fk).
- Add time pressure at some point - talk it out in 30 seconds. If I can’t do that, how can I make a decision in a few seconds in the casino?
- Fix common mistakes:
-Deciding on action before thoughts
(and then justify the action)
-Not asking the right questions in the hand:
- What’s their range
- What portion of that range are we targeting?
- What types of mistakes are they making?
- How do I exploit those mistakes?
-Forgetting to ask the inverse questions on the river, eg if I have a value, what would I bet with my bluff and vice versa?
- Not bucketing my opponent’s range
What kind of questions were useful during practicing?
-What range am I targeting with my bet?
-If I was bluffing and wanted top pair to fold RIGHT NOW, how much would I bet?
-If I had a bluff, what would I do (different than previous question as we want to bet turn and then make them fold by the river, previous question was so I know how much to bet for value)
If I’m targeting range X what size would it call? size bigger if I want it to fold
What are the questions I should ask when thinking if to bluff-catch?
- Am I beating value?
- Is the player capable of bluffing?
- Did I give him rope?
- Is their bet size significant for the game?
- Do they have non-SDV getting to the river?
we are as BB vs BU SRP against a reg, flop comes K8T, bet 20 in 50, call.
Turn 9, X and he bets 75$ into 90$.
What’s his range and what are the considerations in favor of X/R?
A strong range of Kx plus.
No one X/R turns as a bluff so pattern recognition will work against the reg, he might fold AA/AK/KQ on the turn.
85ss as straddle vs UTG,
flop is Q67ssh X/X
turn 2h X
villain bets 40$ into $60,
we raise to 240$ he calls
river Qh, what should I do and why?
Villian’s range is lots of backdoor flushes and Qx, he is never folding to any amount most of his range, so just X/fold.
6545 rainbow, I check, BU bets 140$ into $240, I call with 77.
River is a 3. What should I do here and why?
If he has A5/K5, he would check back this river, so I should go for a bet which 5x will call.
Pot is $520, If I wanted A5 to fold i would go 800$ so 400$ bet.
I’m on HJ, I open AQhh to 35$ HJ 3-bets to 105$, BB cold call, I call.
Flop 876 two hearts, checked to HJ, he goes $130, BB shoves for 210$, HJ has 800$ behind and I cover.
What actions should I consider here?
- HJ’s range is always an overpair, I can shove and make his KK/QQ to fold and be against BB’s wider range which includes worse flush draws and TT/JJ stuff like that.
- I can flat call and with a dry side-pot he will not bluff - but I do know from the preflop and flop action he almost always has an overpaid.
Marc decided to go with the first option and shove all in, HJ tank-folded.
I open from UTG with QJhh to 20$, 3 callers.
Flop AQ7hsh checks around.
Turn 9s I check UTG+1 bets 55$ I call.
River 3h i check he goes $130.
What’s his range? 750$ effective, what should I do?
He bet $130 into 190$, He has a strong hand which isn’t folding, a flush, two pair, a big Ax.
Correct action is - All in.
In game opponent had AKsh and snapped all in.
I opened to 25$ from HJ , 3 callers.
Flop K86r checks around.
Turn K, sb bets 25$ I call.
River A sb checks.
What’s his range, and what should I do about it?
Sb bet tiny the turn checked river, so he almost never has a strong hand like Kx or Ax.
His range can have stuff like underpairs (55,6x), third pair like us (8x) or garbage.
Target his underpairs. Pot is $150, to make 55 to fold $80 is enough so go smaller.
a player squeezes to a small size closing the action in low stakes. What do they have?
a strong range!
I open AKo to 25$ from CO, BU calls, BB makes it 75$, i call (Marc called which I don’t like), BU calls.
Flop comes AT5 sss, BB pots it for 225$, what should I do?
Call. It’s hard for BB to have two spades after squeezing, and i have the best hand here most of the time.
I raise UTG with AKo for 25$, UTG+1 calls, the blinds call. Flop comes AQ5r, the blinds check, I go 50$, UTG+1 raises to $150, what’s his range and what should I do?
A-high boards are underbluffed as fk, and he’s raising into 3 other players, he has AQ/55/A5 most of the time.
Fold on the flop.
What do people do when stuck?
They tend to tilt -so call too much, trying to make up for their loss. DO NOT try to bluff players on tilt.
