leukocytes Flashcards
(11 cards)
from most to least what is the proportion of leukocytes in blood
neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes, basophils
describe the structure of neutrophils
many granules(not prominent) in the cytoplasm and they have a prominent, multi-lobed nucleus
what is the function of neutrophils
they circulate in an inactive state, when stimulated(eg by presence of bacteria), they enter tissue and act as highly motile phagocytes
describe the structure of eosinophils
prominent and many granules in cytoplasm, slightly larger than neutrophils, have a bilobed nucleus
where do they live and what is the function of eosinophils
most live in spleen, lymph nodes and GI tract function = important in inducing ad maintaining inflammation , especially in allergic reactions and asthma, also important in fighting parasitic infection
describe the structure of a basophil
prominent granules in cytoplasm(stain same colour as nucleus), bilobed nucleus
what is the function of a basophil
acts as an effector cell in allergic reactions
describe the structure of a monocyte
numerous small lysosomal granules in cytoplasm, largest cells in blood, non-lobulated nucleus(often kidney shaped)
what is the function of monocytes
serve as precursors of tissue macrophages and together form the mononuclear phagocyte system
describe the structure of lymphocytes and name the 2 classes of them and how they are distinguished between
round nucleus surrounded by thin rim of cytoplasm, no visible granules
2 classes = B and T lymphocytes, cant distinguish between them
what is the function of lymphocytes
both types participate in specific immune response
B cells give rise to antibody secreting plasma cells, T cells form complex set of cells that perform various defense fucntions
