What is the main legislation and standards?
Equality Act 2010, BS 8300, BS 9266, ISO 9999 and Access to and use of buildings: Approved Document M.
What is Document M
Approved Document M provides guidance on making buildings accessible and usable for everyone, including people with disabilities. It covers both dwellings (Volume 1) and non-residential buildings (Volume 2), addressing features like step-free access, wide doorways, accessible toilets, and lifts. Its aim is to promote inclusive design and meet the requirements of Part M of the UK Building Regulations.
BS 8300
Provides detailed guidance on how to design buildings and environments to be accessible and inclusive for all users, including disabled people.
Explain what the Changing Places campaign relates to.
UK initiative aimed at improving toilet and changing facilities for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or other complex needs who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
ISO 9999
standardized system for classifying assistive products used by people with disabilities. These products support individuals in performing tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible due to physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments.
BS 9266:2013 – Design of Accessible and Adaptable General Needs Housing: Code of Practice
provides design guidance to ensure that new housing developments are accessible, inclusive, and adaptable, meeting the needs of a wide range of users
What is inclusive design?
RICS (2022) defines an inclusive environment as recognising and accommodating ‘differences in the way people use the built and natural environments. It facilitates dignified, equal and intuitive use by everyone. It does not physically or socially separate, discriminate or isolate. It readily accommodates and welcomes diverse user needs’.
What are the six principles for creating inclusive environments?
Contribute now and in the future; take a leadership role; apply inclusive design from the outset; do more than comply; seek views to solve challenges; make inclusive design the norm.
What 2 rules apply to inclusive environments?
Rule 4 – treat others respectfully; Rule 5 – act in the public interest.
What are the fundamental design principals?
Focus on people; acknowledge diversity and difference; offer choice; provide flexibility; provide positive experience.
What changes can be made to a building to ensure disabled persons are safe?
Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light; smoke alarms with a strobe light or an emergency call system; a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP)
What is Fitwell?
certification system that promotes health and well-being in building design and operations. It helps developers, property owners, and employers create spaces—both residential and commercial—that support physical, mental, and social health.
Explain your understanding of the UK government’s Disability Strategy.
aims to improve the lives of disabled people by tackling barriers in employment, housing, transport, and public services. Key goals include reducing the disability employment gap, increasing accessible housing, and improving public service accessibility. Though it received criticism for lacking strategic depth and coordination, the strategy marked a step toward more inclusive policymaking. The Disability Unit in the Cabinet Office oversees its implementation.
