movement along the beach in a zig zag pattern in the surf zone.
Groyne
A wall built at right angles to the beach to capture long shore drift.
Gabion
A wire package of large stones used tostabilize the foredunes.
Maaram grass/pingau
spiky grasses that are planted on the foredune to capture sand and help fix erosion on beaches.
sea wall
A permanent structure to protect beach front houses from big waves.
equilibrium beach
The idea that beaches will erode and deposit but over time they will go back to what they were like.
Spit
A narrow strip of sand joined at one end to the beach
Sand bar
A collection of sand out in the sea after winter that is pushed back onto the beach.
cuspate
A wide semi circular area of sand that is collected when the beach is sheltered from big waves.
cliff
A steep bank made of rock.
Channel
A fast moving body of water between 2 areas of land.
