Freedom
want to enhance the freedoms of the individual
do not believe in absolute freedom as this may harm others hens why the state is necessary to protect
both strands agree over the concept of freedom mostly explored by john locke
Individualism
the individuals interests are more important then the collective should not be infringed on by others or the the state
Rationalism
individuals should determine their own self-interest and be in control of their decisions
individuals are capable of rational decisions and logic and reason
Locke believed that that individuals were born as a blank slate and gain knowledge through experiences - education therefore is vital as result liberals take an optimistic view on human nature
early liberals took and egotistical view
Equality
Human rights (natural rights) are a fundamental belief on the basis that humans are the same species with the same natural abilities
This is the principle of foundational equality
This led to the belief of formal equality - all people should have the same legal and political rights
equality of opportunity = all people have the opportunity to go for a job
classic lib - anti discrimination eg equalities act
Modern lib - people may be restrained so more state intervention welfare ect
