liberalism
the belief in individual rights, government to interfere in people’s lives as little as possible. importance of the rule of law.

policies are developed to deal with particular problems (relatively short term)
ideology
ideologies are made up of political ideas (long term beliefs about fundamental societal issues and humanity itself)
political party
a group of people looking to gain political power, usually following one ideology and having their own set of policies
what beliefs were common before the emergence of liberalism?
- religion and the great chain of being

what is the great chain of being?
god -> angels -> humanity -> animals -> plants -> matter -> nothingness
feudalism
a system in which people were given land and protection by people of higher rank, and worked and fought for them in return
monarchical rule
a form of government where a single person, the monarch, is the head of state and has supreme authority
absolutism
a political theory and practice where a single ruler has unlimited power and authority
what is the significance of the renaissance to liberalism?
- it brought people into europe (specifically the west) and introduced new cultures, food, music, and non-religious ideas like science
- eventually led to the enlightenment
enlightenment
- feudalism and absolutism became no longer dogmatic
- led to protests and questioning of the catholic church, the printing press, scientific revolution, economic/social/political/philosophical development and a brand new approach to political philosophy - the world should be considered rationally, not based on faith or religion
