  • CL’s= Wollstonecraft challenge perception of female inherent inferiority- opportunity to education to tackle, her and Mill= legal rights
  • ML agree- Freidan - rational nature stifled by oppressive society - ‘Feminine Mystique’ and continued support for legal equality e.g. Equal Rights Amendments US and state active role (taken further)

though all driven by HN, extent of individualism and extent to which able to pursue without state - disagreements
- CL - egotistical individualism and negative freedoms - context of 19th cent industrialisation - HERBERT SPENCER ‘Social Darwinism’ therefore no need for state
- ML - developmental individualism through enabling state. MILL - positive freedoms - state proactive
