Define Magisterium
- Council of the Catholic Church made up of the Pope and the bishops.
- Given the gift of the Holy Spirit which guides them to make the right decisions.
Define Heaven
- People who have accepted God’s forgiveness in this life, will live forever with God when they die.
- This meeting with God is what we call “Heaven”.
Define Death
- The end of physical life.
- When the body stops working completely.
Define Eternal Life
- Life in Heaven after death.
- How Jesus describes how we should live.
Define Soul
- Part of a person which lives on after death of the body.
- A name for a human being’s mind.
Define Resurrection
- Raising of the body again after death.
- Christians believe that Jesus resurrected and that all people will experience it at the end of time.
Define Judgement
- At the end of our life, we will be faced with a choice to choose God or reject God.
- The decision we take leads to judgement and decides whether we ‘go’ to Heaven or Hell.
Define Hell
- People who have chosen to reject God’s message have chosen to live away from God forever.
- This lack of God for all of time is what we call “Hell”.
Resurrection - WHAT do Catholics believe?
WHAT - The Catholic Church teaches that at the end of time, the body will be raised and united with the soul and final judgement will be made. The final judgement is the judgement by God of the whole human race at the end of time.
WHAT - 1 CORINTHIANS 15 = Part of a letter written by St Paul to an early Christian community, so they could understand key Christian beliefs like the resurrection.
WHAT - 1 CORINTHIANS 15 = The resurrection of Jesus is a central belief in the religion of Christianity. If people reject belief in resurrection, they also reject the resurrection of Jesus. (JONH 3:36 says, “whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them”).
WHAT - 1 CORINTHIANS 15 = St Paul asks why Christians would continue their faith when they face severe punishments on earth (at the time, Christians were killed by the Romans because of their religion) if the resurrection was untrue.
Resurrection - WHY/EVIDENCE of why Catholics believed in resurrection?
WHY/EVIDENCE - “He is risen” - The Gospels
WHY/EVIDENCE - “I am the resurrection” - The Gospel
WHY/EVIDENCE - “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.”
Resurrection - HOW does this impact the life of Catholics?
HOW - Catholics would pray to God, thanking him for sending his Son, Jesus, so they have a chance for eternal life forever in Heaven.
The Survival of the Soul - WHAT do Catholics believe?
WHAT - The belief that the soul does not die.
WHAT - Catholics believe that the soul is the non-physical, spiritual part of a person.
WHAT - Catholics believe that the soul was given by God.
WHAT - The soul is what continues to live on in Heaven, Hell or Purgatory after the physical body has died.
WHAT - Catholics believe that the soul lives on after death and that it is reunited with the body for the final judgement, when resurrection of the body (combined with the soul) will happen.
The Survival of the Soul- WHY/EVIDENCE of why Catholics believed in the survival of the soul?
WHY/EVIDENCE - “God breathed life into Adam’s nostrils” - God giving Adam his soul in Genesis.
Resurrection - HOW does this impact the life of Catholics?
HOW - Catholics will have a religious funeral service reminding people of the death and resurrection of Jesus through the music and words spoken. This will help them to live in hope that they will be reunited with their loved one’s soul again.
HOW - Catholics would pray to God, thanking him for sending his Son, Jesus, so they have the chance for an eternal life and resurrection at the end of time.
The Afterlife - WHAT do Catholics believe?
WHAT - ESCHATOLOGY = A term used to describe religious ideas or beliefs about death, judgement, and the afterlife.
WHAT - Catholic Christians believe that each human is made of the body and the soul. These are two parts which make one whole person.
WHAT - Catholic Christians believe that the soul will live on after death and go on to the afterlife.
WHAT - Although physical death still happens, those who believe in Jesus and live good lives will be given eternal life in Heaven.
WHAT - HEAVEN = Where souls spend eternity in the presence of God.
WHAT - HELL = It is the absence of God forever and is often described as a place of torment.
WHAT - PURGATORY = This is a place where some people who have sinned are purified in a cleansing fire, after which they are accepted into Heaven.
The Afterlife - WHY/EVIDENCE of why Catholics believed in the afterlife?
WHY/EVIDENCE - “He is risen” - The Gospels
WHY/EVIDENCE - “Our Father, who art in Heaven” - The Lord’s prayer
The Afterlife - HOW does this impact the life of Catholics?
HOW - Catholics will try to follow the teachings of Jesus such as ‘love thy neighbour’ in their everyday lives to ensure that they have a positive judgement by God.
Purgatory - WHAT do Catholics believe?
WHAT - PURGATORY = This is a place where some people who have sinned are purified in a cleansing fire, after which they are accepted into Heaven.
WHAT - Only Catholic Christians have this idea of purgatory.
