Life cycle of a flowering plant Flashcards
(18 cards)
What does a seed need
Water oxygen and warmth
What are the main parts of a flower
Male part stamen made up of anther and filament and female part called carpel made up of stigma style ovary
What does the pollen contain
Male sex cell gametes found on the anther
What does the ovule contain
Female egg cell (gamete) found in the ovary
How does pollination occur
It occurs when a pollen grain lands on a stigma
How does cross pollination occur
It is carried out by wind or insects and is the transfer of pollen from anther of one flower to stigma in a flower of another plant of same species
How does fertilisation occur
It occurs when the male sex cell (gametes) fuses with the female sex cell (gamete) this is sexual reproduction
What happens to the fertilised ovule
Develops a seed
What happens to the ovary
Ripens to form a fruit
What is a seed made up off
Seed coat embryo and food store
How can a seed be dispersed
Wind, water, or animals (internal: passed by feces or external caught on fur and dropped) or self dispersal (human)
What is germination
The development of a plant embryo into a plant with green leaves
What happens during germination
The food store is digested to give the young plant energy for growth
What does the anther do
Produces male sex cell (pollen)
What is the stamen
Male part of flower (filament and anther)
What does the sepal do
It protects unopen flower bud
What is the petal
Brightly coloured to attract insects
How does self pollination occur
Transfer or pollen from an anther to a stigma in the same flower or another flower of same plant
