Life Cycles Of Bryophytes Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

What life cycles does the Bryophyte follow.

A

Alternation generation: meaning there is an alternation between the haploid gametophyte stage and diploid sporophyte stage

Q

What happens in the Gametophyte stage ( Haploid- n)

A

-dominant green, photosynthetic stage
-Production of Antheridia (male organ): which produces sperm.
-Production of Archegonia (female organ): which contains egg cells.
-Water is required for sperm to swim to the egg in the archegonium.

Q

What happens in the Fertilization stage?

A

-Occurs in water: sperm swim from Antheridia to the egg in the Archegonium.
- Formation of zygote (2n)

Q

What happens during the sporophyte stage (Diploid- 2n)

A

-The sporophyte grows out of the gametophyte and remains attatched to it.
-Sporophyte consists of:
-Foot (anchors it to
gametophyte)
-Seta (stalk raising the
sporangium)
-Capsule (the sporangium that
produces spores)
-Meiosis occurs inside capsue to produce spores.

Q

What happens during the spore dispersal and germination stage?

A

-Spores are released.
-Under favorable conditions, spores germinate into a Protonema.
-The protonema develops into a new gametophyte, restarting the cycle.
