What is WorkSafe?
WorkSafe New Zealand (WorkSafe) is responsible for overseeing work health and safety and the Health and Safety at Work Act.

WorkSafe’s role includes:
* monitoring and enforcing compliance with work health and safety legislation
* providing guidance, advice and information on work health and safety
* helping build co-operative and consultative relationships between people who have health and safety duties and the people to whom they owe those duties and their representatives
* collecting, analysing and publishing statistics and other information relating to work health and safety.

36
Q

What is the purpose of Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

A

The new Act introduces new responsibilities for managing work-related risks that could cause injury, illness or even death. Everyone has a role to play and the Act makes those roles and responsibilities clear.
Under the Act, all notifiable events should be recorded and/or reported, both within your workplace’s safety management system and formally to WorkSafe.

37
Q

What is the purpose of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014

A

The Vulnerable Children Act 2014 restricts people who have convictions for certain offences from working in roles where they deal with children. As a pool lifeguard you may be working with children, so part of your employment process will involve a police check.

A

ladder climbing (leg movements that look like the person is climbing a ladder)

face turned towards safety or land for possible help

vertical position with head back

mouth disappearing below the surface

arm is out to the side or slightly to the front

movement decreasing, head getting lower into the water

can only maintain movement for 20-60 seconds.

39
Q

What can cause drowning without distress

A
  • a heart attack
  • a stroke
  • hyperventilation
  • a blow or knock to the head
  • very cold water
  • excessive alcohol
  • passing out from playing ‘who can hold their breath the longest’
  • shallow water blackout.
40
Q

What are the Four elements of pool supervision

A

There are four key elements of effective supervision:
1. knowing your area of responsibility
2. appropriate positioning and patrolling
3. preventative intervention
4. recognising the signs of people in difficulty.

41
Q

What is Patrolling

A

Movement around poolside makes best use of your frontal and peripheral (sideways or ‘out the corner of your eye’) vision. Poolside patrolling should include the water immediately alongside the pool edge, an area often missed.

42
Q

Why is patrolling good

A
  • communicate with customers
  • avoid possible dead water areas
  • provide support to other lifeguards when needed
  • identify and deal with incidents faster.
43
Q

Why is scanning a good technique

A

Use frontal vision to fix on a point and peripheral vision to maintain a general awareness of your surroundings. Good scanning skills allow you to look long enough to be able to determine what is happening. You shouldn’t spend too long looking at one point so that you become less aware of other customers in your coverage area.

44
Q

How often do you rotate?

A

Every 15 minutes or so
